Olivia Bowen, Swansea University third year student tells us about her experience of cycling the Swansea Bayways routes and how it’s helped her discover Swansea….

“I’d never really tried cycling, at least not for more than 30mins on a Saturday morning with my dad. It’s not that I don’t enjoy it! But I could always find an excuse to grab a lift to Uni or to get the bus into town rather than cycle.

The first time I heard about the Bayways routes was at Uni actually- there’s a big push with getting students to walk or cycle to lectures and we were sent information on how to hire bikes through the Uni to help us to do just that. I’ll be honest, it took some convincing especially as I’m a bit of a ‘fair weather’ cyclist! I decided one day to cycle to Uni with a friend- we needed to be there for the morning but thought we could go and explore using the cycle routes in the afternoon.

It’s silly really because I haven’t looked back since! The thought of planning the route and securing the bike safely was so much more of a challenge than doing it. It’s also so much faster than I thought- it would usually take me about 30mins on public transport but using the dedicated cycle route, I can be door to door in under 25mins and that saved time (and money) ads up. It’s also nice to just have some freedom and not be wasting time waiting for lifts or buses all of the time.

It’s been a great way to discover parts of Swansea too. I’ve been really keen to try and up my fitness recently so any free time I have, I try and get out on the bike and just explore the routes to see where they can take me.

I’d definitely say- if you haven’t tried cycling as your commute yet (and you live close enough to Uni/work) then go for it! It will only take one go to show you how easy and rewarding it is and you don’t have to do it every day, but mixing it up a bit makes the week a bit more interesting!”
